Rackspace offers dedicated servers and colocation. They are hosting providers, but not in the sense that you really need to worry about at the moment. A webserver is simply a computer linked to the internet that has software installed to serv websites. Companies like rackspace rent computers (servers) in specialised buildings that have redundant power supplies and extremely fast connections.
So a dedicated server is basically a computer in a datacentre that a person either rents or owns. Earlier I mentioned colocation which is basically paying for the space and the connection using a server you provide.
When you see people selling 'shared' hosting. It is basically just one of these dedicated servers that has had a control panel installed and then space on the server is resold to users. In the shared environment most server will have hundreds of sites, meaning that resources are limited.
I tried to explain it simply. I think I have done pretty well, but let me know if you have any questions.
A web hosting service is a type of Internet hosting service that allows individuals and organizations to provide their own website accessible via the World Wide Web.
