Most friends will expect you work free for them , they may get sometime angry when you show them the invoice for there work

I have been doing web design for nine years and the friends are the worst. They seems offended that you would charge them. I have a guy that has been coming to me for three years with I've got work for you. Then he disappears. His latest concoction has rug sample pics as supposed background. It looks like a cheap hair piece.

I never do something without first telling them the cost, friend or not. Everyone knows that its cash and carry.

I think the best thing to do IS tell them up front what the cost of any job is going to be and include the phrase "I need half of that to start the job". I really feel that people who consider themselves friends but won't pay for the work, needn't be my friends.

I am pretty harsh.

Ok , but i think asking for money upfront would be a bit rude, many people get frowned by it

OMGosh, what an apropos thread.

Indeed, I wonder about folks who have the brass to ask for freebies from anyone.

Is it just me? If I ask someone to do something that I can't do - I ALWAYS offer something. Funds, goods, trade - whatever; but I like to have an agreement in advance.

Having been on both sides of this fence, I agree with SageMother that a rate should be agreed upon up front - and a deadline, too. I almost will not let a freelancer do something for me without pay - because a lot of people think that means that it doesn't matter how long it takes to get done.

The only thing bad I see about asking for half up front is someone just starting out who doesn't have many references to attest to their skill. I might not insist on half - but I don't think a smaller percentage of down-payment is unreasonable; for ANYBODY.

Exactly. I agree with the above post. People asking for big jobs done just because you're a friend for free just because of the six letter word friend present doesn't mean big jobs can be done for free. It's like asking a neighbor with a computer store to open a computer store for you. It doesn't work that way.

Oh , yes thats case many time, but sometimes we people even tend to do same thing, sometimes we even tend to ask our oqn friends for favour and dont pay , i think we have to change first than to expect other changed

I understand what you mean, but I haven't had the exact same problem. THe problem that I keep getting from some lcients is that they are under the impression I should do anything extra (that's not in the contract) for free.

Ahhhh i have had that problem as well. Just becuase you have taken the job and have been paid for it they expect that you should take it upon yourself to do a little extra for free. They will try to throw in something while you are in the middle of working for them.
