Default What do i pay someone to design a look for my website...

Hi,

I wanted to hire someone(local) to design my website look. Meaning, I would be doing all the programming of the site, but I need a designer to make all the grapics. ie. making a nice background gradient, menu, banner, logo, etc.

Also, Its a html based website not flash based.

I have looked at website templates and am not finding what I like, thats why I would like to work with someone to explain what I am looking for.

I was looking at local schools for freshly graduated designers, but i am not sure how much to pay a student for this type of service. Does anyone have suggestions. They would be basically designing 2-3 pages in photoshop and a few custom banners and logos (from photos i will supply them).

I am looking to spend about $2500. Is that reasonable? I am hoping it wont take more than 6 weeks. What are your thoughts?

Thanks very Much!
John

I think that is more than reasonable! One of our Admins here, in fact, is a pretty good designer *seen his work*...RandyC, maybe you can work something out with him if you like. He's awesome.

Anyhow, my one suggestion is never hire before you see their work...Have them design something out of the blue to make sure that they posess the skills that you require for the job.

Thanks for the response.

Actually i was looking locally but just confused on how much i can expect to pay.

One more question, Do i pay per hour, or by design? For example, if its estimated that 2 weeks cost $2500, they may get my 3 pages designed in 1 week. So i pay them full salary? and what if they took longer? do i pay them more? Or do i pay a set fee when they get the design right. Im a bit confused what industry standard is for payment.

Thanks

Not a problem. The pay really just depends on the design and the time it takes to do it. I would give a set price and a set time to do it in. Also ask about their turnaround time which is the time you have to ask for modifications to the design you may not like or change your mind about.

For example:

List

Design/project information
Budget
Due time

Then ask for

Portfolio
Example designs that can be done
Their turnaround offered

I personally would never pay per an hour because you just really never know how much time they really spent on it. They could say they spent one week on it at 5 hours a day which will cost you a pretty penny if they have a $20/an hour policy.

well thanks sarahlee for the compliment :D

and also price usually varies on the project, how much time the person has, how many pages you are doing.

Per design or by hour is usually by choice of the designer not you, Many designers charge per hour and some do on a design bases. I never do by hour as people can easilly miscount or argue with you that you used the time to mess up and stuff.

Cheers
