The purpose of Search Engine Optimization is to dramatically increase visitation of potential customers to your website by achieving first page and ultimately a top three page rank in searches using keywords and keyword phrases that define your business and products.

Here are some dos and don’ts in SEO:

Dos

1. Submit your website to all search engines and directories just once. Repeated submission can get your site banned from the search engines.
2. Research your keywords thoroughly. You really cannot start optimizing until you have researched out your keywords and know how the optimization will play out.
3. Do develop strong, current, and unique content that is both keyword-rich and seen as valuable to your visitors.
4. Do develop two site maps of your site. One for visitors (that will also help the search engines) and one for the search engines.
5. Your website optimization should work for both search engine spiders as well as human visitors. An uncluttered layout, comprehensive intra-site navigational links and good content must be the metrics to define user operability. Search engines actually prefer what humans do, so keep your pages uncluttered and easy to use.

Don’t

1. Don’t spam the crawlers/robots/spiders by having hidden text/content e.g. hiding the keywords within the page with font color matching the background in the page.
2. Beware of irrelevant keywords. Search engines hate finding irrelevant keywords on your site-especially in your meta tags.
3. Don't settle for stock content. Take the time to develop custom content for your site. Don’t use manufacture descriptions unless you add your own descriptive content as well.
4. Don't give up on your SEO plan and don't obsess about PageRank. SEO takes time and patience. But do use Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools to learn more about your site and help Google (by far the world leader in search) understand your site.
5. Don't let broken links devastate your website, make sure all links are working good.
