I use blogging to get out the word about what I am up to and what my plans to draw a little attention to my ventures. I am learning to keep a friendly but interesting tone to try to build readership and try to include enough good tags in the body of each post.
I am concerned about keyword density being TOO great. What is a good formula or dispersal for key words that still maintains tag rich content? How many times in a 500 to 900 word entry would it be safe to repeat tags/keywords?

If you overdoe it then google will think you are attempting to get every type of related field and they will overlook them, i would say in a 900 word entry maybe 10 times tops?
When I was first worried about keywords, there was a site with a test you could use on articles. Basically, you just cut and pasted your article and it gave you the stats back on it. I didn't need it for long and don't have the url anymore but I'm sure you could find one by googling. It's kind of interesting to get a feel for things.
A lot of the top ranked sites only have a .3% density which is far to low. I would say 1.5% would be a good denisty. It is enough to be highly ranked for it but it wouldn't be considered keyword stuffing by google.
