you can but its a very long a loborious task hence why alot of people tend to get seo companies to do it for them.

Those tips are great. SEO and link building has a strong relationship. More links mean more SE traffic.
I personally prefer Forum participation and Blog commenting.

Yes it is very long process, many site owners are hire seo company or to give freelance work.

Nice pointers. I would prefer one-way links though over reciprocals as the former has more value SEO-wise.

One technique I use is to set up a Google Alert for my targeted keywords. Then every morning I get an email about the blogs using that keyword. I can then comment on the blog as it is relevant to my niche.
