You should start of by looking for high page rank relevant websites and start a link exchange with them. Other ways of improving your PR is by writing some articles which include links back to your website and to publish them in article directories.

Not sure. Google it.
You want to link up with a bunch of different sites. You also need a high keyword density, meaning to include your keyword as much as you can, but don't overdo it.

OK, first of all well done for asking one of the hardest marketing questions on the internet, Ill try to explain it but this is just a sprinkling compared to the real guide book. Here are some proven methods:

Link Building
Quickest way to get a higher update is by linking with other sites, link exchanges work great, try emailingg webmasters asking for link swaps. But dont be realistic, Mr Yahoo doesnt want your link back..
The higher the PR of the linking site the quicker yours will go up, for example I work by this:

1 PR4 link - no change
2/3 PR4 links - PR3/4
6+ PR links - PR4
2/3 PR5 links - PR4/5 if lucky.

goes up like that...

Article Submission
Already touched on earlier on this topic, but submit articles to places like ArticleCake - Free Article Index - Traffic and Content for you Website for free and get traffic and PR increases!

Content
The most important, you need fresh exciting content, without it google will hate you and youll be one of those loners with MSN. You need to create a nice site with some new articles each week, try and get as many links to those articles as possible so that someone will find them (ie googlebot).

Just a quick note at the end, google updates its PR machines every 2 months or so so dont expect an instant update!

The Page Rank Of A Website depends solely on your inboud links. The PageRank of a website is calculated with the help of the following equation:

PR(A)=(1-d)+(PR OF LINK PAGE 1*D/NO OF LINKS IN PAGE1)+ (PR OF LINK PAGE 2*D/NO OF LINKS IN PAGE2)+.....+(PR OF LINK PAGE P*D/NO OF LINKS IN PAGE P).

Where A,is your website
D is a damping factor =0.85
link page 1,2...,P are the pages that has a link pointing to your website and can be found out by conducting a search on google with link:www.website.com.

Proper Link Exchange is the perfect way to improve your page rank on the net.A good page rank ensures better traffic which further enhances the website prospects on the net.

PR is determined by quality back links your site has. Focus on link building.

The most common ways of getting backlinks are thru social bookmarking, directory submissions, submitting to press release sites, forum sigs, etc. etc.. What's important from an SEO point of view is getting relevant and quality (organic / natural) back links. You get this if you provide very good content that would make other sites want to link to your site. Also having back links to high PR sites helps your site on PR building as well. Reciprocal links are weighed less in PR, but is still a factor to be considered.
