Default PHP or ASP

What do u use to built your sites, i used to use ASP intially, but i found it hard to maintain it since it needed windows hosting and now i have turned to PHP which is free and can be used on any linux server

I use PHP because it's free, versatile and really easy to work with. There is also a lot more community support for PHP than ASP.

Yes ASP has it's uses just like PHP has it's own uses. Usually the paid product will handle scalibility better and will in the end be more powerful. Just like Apache/IIS, they are both pretty powerful and apache tends to be better for smaller scale projects but when it needs to be scaled up IIS is more secure and handles the growth much better than apache.

I have issue with anything that has to do with windows. Regardless of what I am doing, be it business or personal (unless a customer has specific requirements) I will do what I can to avoid windows.

Its fine , people dont want to use windows, but since you will be buying the tools of windows so you get better support from MS for that tool

Agreed, but when you are not dealing with PCs, avoiding windows becomes a whole lot easier in my experience. My most recent real job (prior to motherhood) was as a Cisco networking tech, and for the longest time I never dealt with windows. With the recent mergers and buyouts however I can see how that is very soon going to change.

Windows is just limited to PCs , once you go highere and start dealing with Servers and more big tools you really dont rely on MS windows

How common ARE the windows servers? What capability do they have, power wise-do they compare with the *nix servers? And what of windows databases-are they still as bad (server versions) as they were five years ago. I've been out of that loop for a while.

I'd say Windows servers make up 1/4 of the market, maybe more. *nix are far, far more popular because they are more stable and you avoid the rediculous licensing fee's. I'm not a huge networking guy though, they are about as powerful tool wise as the *nix servers and the only real difference is one is open source and one isn't which affects the tools they use and the support you get with each.
