Default What is LISP good for?

I'm taking a course in my university, where they teach Scheme, which is a dialect of LISP.
And that language annoys the hell out of me.
I'm used to Java, where anybody can understand what your code does, and then you move to list, where a simple function that computes Fibonacci numbers is so complex nobody will understand what it does.

And my question is, is LISP actually used anywhere, and why won't a normal language do?

Wow....
I haven't heard of LISP in forever. It could be they are teaching this because it kills time and justifies the cost of tuition, but that would be cruel and unusual punishment. I haven't seen anything addressing LISP but I don't do anything that would put me in contact with it.

Good Luck.

maybe because if you use it and someone trys to steal the code and use it themselves. they will have a hard time putting it on their own website. lol

Lisp is good for :
Highly customizable "quick and dirty" utilities for doing everyday things. (i.e. as the most powerful scripting language available).
Large, complicated, mission critical applications which would be impossible to develop in any other language.
Fast prototyping and Rapid Application Development (RAD).
Continuous-availability applications, especially those that require functionality changes after initial deployment.
