ha, then i disagree with everyone..

though gsmile your phrase 'ripping off' isn't how it should be portrayed or interpreted.

the open-source community is one for sharing and the further development of ideas.

maybe from now on with clients i will tell them straight up ...

i can build you a script from scratch and it will do exactly what you want and nothing else, and it will cost a bundle.

or i can take this system that is proven and tested with a large community to back it up, extensible if you ever change your wants/needs and save you some money.

your choice.

Free scripts are good for framework but not for the final product, and should be used in conjunction with a good PHP coder to release the desired effect?
Is that more to it Tyler?

i agree with that. just felt like there was too much negativity going on towards the free stuff.

its not shorting the customer to use something that is already written unless you are passing it off as if you did it by hand.

i think my point has been made already. i understand where y'all are coming from too.

But when someone pays you to BUILD a script, you don't take snippets of other peoples' scripts. If you paid someone to build a script for you, you wouldn't want them to take snippets off free scripts, would you?

So you guys would rather use a premade script that creat one yourself. How long does it take to actually put a script together?

Sure.... you can use free premade scripts. It's just that when the client finds out (and most do.), I don't think they'll use your services again. And doesn't everyone have friends? So when the client doesn't like your services, they pass it on to another client and pretty soon, you'll have a bad reputation.

I think you are completely right and that is why I won't use premade scripts.

Randle, in short, how long it takes depends on what you want it to do. A simple script can be written in 2-5 minutes, the more complex can take hours to get right. Days, even.......or worse if you foul something up and can't find where the error is as happened once or twice.

gsmile read my exchange with halotree again,
I dont substitute pre-made scripts for stuff I am supposed to build.

That's not what they are meant for and not how it works.

Again, sometime it is the best interest of the customer for you to look into alternatives to writing everything from scratch.

I think that most people find it easiar to pick and choose a template but the thing that you may find out later on is that your template has been chosen by 20 thousand other people so now you are no longer unique. Thats when the trust issues begin with your friends and clients.
