On a site like ezine articles I'd think chances are good commenting will help (if the links are do-follow) however I wouldn't go around commenting on all the article directories out there... I'd stick only to one's that seem to show up higher on google (naturally).

Yes article/blog commenting the most important thing for SEO purpose because if you comments on do-follow blogs or articles with targeted keywords so search engine consider them as a great backlink.

Hi,
Considering that it is a cornerstone of effective SEO, then I would say it is very useful. Blog commenting, if done right can be used as a great way to build backlinks, furthermore increase SERPS. Never leave spammy three-four word comments like "great post thanks" or "thanks for the information". It does not make you look good at all.
