Many different ways. Im trying to use the backlinks thing just now on forums. I know there are companys which do this for us. I know wiredflame does it and i think a few others do to. Trying to submit to all the forum directorys etc is important and exchanging links with other sites too.

How long have you been doing your back links? Have you seen an increase in your traffic?

I usually promote my site through social bookmarking sites such as Digg and Technorati. These are free tools for marketing and I take advantage of them in every way I can.
