Default Logos

I rarely see anyone discuss the compnents of an excellent logo, but the logo is the identifying mark for the business it represents. Is there a perfect size? Shoul dit be animated or static?

What are the qualities you find in a good logo?

I think logos should be static. They can be whatever size you like. (take google's. GOOGLE is google's logo. It's not that small, is it? It depends on what you like.

Personally, I prefer a logo to be static. I don't want the logo taking my attention away from the content. Also, a header size is nice but anything bigger is too much, I think. Again, I find that alot of sites have a logo that takes over. I know people are proud of their work but readers are not coming there to see the logo but rather the content.

I think animated logos detract from the rest of the page. There is a time and place for movement, IMHO, and in a logo isn't one of them. Of course, there are certain circumstances an animated logo might work, but off hand, I can't think of any.

I'll chime in as one more vote for static. Some of the moving ones are nice, but only when the rest of the site matches up to the movement and can hold your interest.

Yup yup; I shall chime in with 'static'. And in addition, I would say that any site logo needs to be one that resolves well across different kinds of media. If you look at a logo and can't imagine it being an eye-catching and memorable image on a billboard, license plate, newspaper ad, office sign or brochure, then the design ought to be reconsidered.

Also, I find logos that use a minimum number of colors and/or fonts are the most effective, not only as sharp, memorable branding but also for cost-effectiveness. Ever try to price screenprinted Tshirts for more than 2 colors? How about embroidered caps? Embossed business cards? You get the picture.

If a site is more for fun than business and the owner just likes to play with graphics, though, then I say knock yasself out on the animation, colors, the works. Just, please, dear sweet Dweebus please, NO midi files!! :p

i agree with heather. if someone can't remember the logo after seeing it a couple times, then it is no good. you should start over and create, or have someone create one for you.
