Default Search Engine Optimization & Website Submission

Many people get confused about search engine services because there are so many abbreviations that are used. Remember that SEO (search engine optimization) in simple terms means to take a website and make it more search engine friendly regarding the design of it, keyword placement, navigation, and so forth. Search engine submission refers to just sending the URL to the search engines so they can find it easier or faster.

Professional website design refers to both of these services and many other things that are essential to ranking well on the search engines such as link popularity campaigns, keyword research, effective copywriting, etc. I’ve seen many clients in the past come to me asking me “why isn’t my site ranking high on the search engines..?” when they just spent $99 to submit their website to 200 search engines or more. The simple truth is that only about 5-10 major search engines will bring you 95% of your search engine traffic. There is no reason to focus on the other 195 search engines.

However, search engines are still only part of your full website traffic. Half of it might include links from other websites (which is another large part), and then you will have the minor things that bring in traffic such as business cards, or word of mouth and so forth. Of course the percentages shift depending on how you market your website and the industry you are.

Good points. There is really only four major search engines that bring much traffic. The rest is just a waste of money because they will index you from the major ones. SEO is also an ongoing process that must be done on a regular basis.

There are really a lot of ways to get traffic to yor site. SE and directory submissions are among the basic steps you could do. This is a bit old school but certainly has their benefits. SEO though quality and targeted link building is the way to go for long term traffic from SE's. Ads, PPC, banners, etc. gives you faster traffic but would require a budget. ;)
