Default Backlinks - what are they?

I have ran websites for years but i have never really looked into the right way of doing things. So i have a question - what are backlinks? i hear of google and co using them but i dont know what they are. And why when i search on one site it says i have over 1000 google backlinks but when i use iwebtools it says i have none.....i dont get it.

Backlinks are links that point towards your site.
Google uses it's own index to check the number of backlinks, while iWebtools uses another.
So, some backlinks might be indexed by google, but not indexed by iWebtools.

It's pretty weird that there's such a huge difference between google and iWebTools, but it is possible.

What you have to be careful of are spammers linkbacks. I check daily for those because the spamming jerks have gotten very clever!

An example of a backlink would be where you leave a comment on a blog and they allow you to put your url in with your comment. That is one type of back link.

All backlinks, including links from forums, count as back links. I had a website that didn't have any links from regular sites, just from forum signature, and it gained a PR1. :D

Thats interesting info Joe i will need to go and make sure i have the right thing in my signatures!. Have been working on my backlink thing recently too...so i know how Will feels. I try not to spam anywhere either which slows the process a little.

Does back linking affect your traffic. Does it give you more ways of building your traffic. Well i guess that was a stupid question huh. Because if you link on someone site then that means their visitors see your link. :D

Yeah DUhhh!lol, of course they do. If you had a back link on 10 thousand websites mostly 5 thousand of those websites are going to produce traffic from their vistors. Its a numbers game. I think its one of the best ways to go when trying to build traffic for your site.
