I honestly have no idea. But, I wouldn't go and just start one unless you seriously wanted to. Competition is really tough now, and it would be a hard market to get into.

Well it is possible for any user to start one, but your going to need either a dedicated server or one with alot of bandwidth. There are three parts to a dedicated server, Indexing ( your server browses the web - continuously), Recording (getting information on the pages) and Listing ( showing results similar to what the user entered ).

There are literally hundreds of scripts out there to do this, but the best in my opinion:

Have a read ... and tell us if you need help.

With Google, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, dogpile, ChaCha, etc. out there (and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head), is there really a call for another search engine? I think the market for search engines is saturated. I really don't know that if you DID create a new one, that anyone would ever get there to use it. They're too used to the major ones out there already.

Get a catchy name and get a good script. I know of myownsearch which is a php script that is very useful. It was a pay script but i think its now free. Its quite good only disadvantage is that is has no spiders to compile its own database. Some do and are quite expensive.

Once you get software and a server set up, you need to figure out the types of sites you are going to try and attract first. Since there are so many larger search engines up and running you probably have to do something with a Niche and I don't know how you would compete even after that.

It may not be a need for a new search engine but there is always room for one. If you do it right. If you offer something that the other search engines don't offer than you can move up. Just searchbigdadd.com is moving up slowly. They are abou to take over.
