are 3 ways links good or can the search engines pick up on what's going on?

as long as they aren't on the same ip address. you should be ok.

Three way linking was really popular a few years back and linkfarms where created for this very purpose. It seems though that especially Google doesn't give credit too much for it any more.

3 way links are good if you can get links from diffrent IP address , specially google loves links from class 3 IP address , whichh range in 202.x.x.x range .
