Default Subdomain of an old domain or a new domain?

I want to start a new website. I have a one-year old domain which is indexed by all search engines. What do you recommend:

A subdomain on that domain which is already known to search engines?

or

Registering a fresh new domain?

subdomains are not given as much rank as top level domains. Can you register a new domain and send some inbound links from the old domain?

IMO new domain will be the best option. It will look more professional and can get your better results.
