meta tags are not worthless. you just have to know how to structure them properly. google doesn't take as much credit to meta tags as other search engines but you need to structure them correctly.
Yeah as things move on in the internet meta tags are becoming less relevant. At one point they were the be all and end all but now most search engines dont use them overly.
Don't forget that your meta tags are used for your page or site description and also in the link in the SERPS so good text can be a big factor when search engine users are choosing which site to click on.
Google does give less importance to meta tags vs. yahoo. But don't leave it out. It is important to present your site to SE's with your meta for other reasons other than SERP.
The most significant aspect of meta-tags is that search engines pay a lot of importance to them and hence they have come to be widely accepted in the SEO process.

meta tags are not for users
mainly its good for serps you should always add a meta tag headline and description
it must be note that google reads only first 25 characters so you should always list your important keyword in first 25 words and then the rest or not so important keywords
