Google may not rely heavily on the meta keyword and description tags, but they should still be used. Google loves sites that are built according to webmaster guidelines, and using proper meta tags are still part of the webmaster guidelines. Also, we have to remember that other SEs do use these meta tags for its algorithm. Furthermore, the description meta tag is also great for acting as a "byline" that shows up under your website in the SERPs. So, if a surfer gets a search result page from Google, and your site is in there with the other ones, the description meta tag may be enough to get them to click on your site rather then the competition.
