I've used 780 for width and manage to make it work fine. I remember spending about a half a day once trying to work it out and that's what I came up with lol.

The standards at first was 800*600 but now due to increase in width of moniter many people have started making site for 1024*768 , but i think still today we should make one 800*600 site and center the whole site , that looks fine in any screen and any browser

I usually stay in the 800 range unless I am being lazy and it's my own site. Then I usually simply tweak the modules or elements and place them. I hate to hand code my own things...go figure. So whatever their settings are tend to be the ones I use. Freewebs has the option of choosing a templte of the "stretch" variety that is in the 1024 range.

It is easy to tell what monitor setting visitors to a web page are using using any vistor stat collecting methods. 800 is about the minimum width as far as I can tell. But it is true that most people are now using greater widths than that. Laptops are normally over 1000 pixels wide. That is why in general website design I much prefer flexible widths. I am on 1280 wide and many sites fill no more than half of my screen.

There one more trick to maintain your site's width , now by some Css tricks you can create site which will strecth in huge screens and srink in small screen that way in any resolution it will look fine

and the trick for that is

- always use "%" in place of "px" whenever you have to define any kind of size in the css
