What is SFTP????? - Freelance Forum

Hi all,
I am new in programming and I just joined a company that offers secure file transfer software components. So I firstly want to gather some selective information on why should I use Secure FTP instead of FTP? And why is SFTP better than FTP?

SFTP, or secure FTP, is a program that uses SSH (Secure Shell - encrypted channel for logging into another computer over a network) to transfer files. Unlike standard FTP, it encrypts both commands and data, preventing passwords and sensitive information from being transmitted in the clear over the network. It is functionally similar to FTP, but because it uses a different protocol, you can't use a standard FTP client to talk to an SFTP server, nor can you connect to an FTP server with a client that supports only SFTP.

Hi, first of all congratulation for job. Despite the similarity in name the two protocols are completely different. In FTP all data is passed back and forth between the client and server without the use of encryption. This makes it possible for an eavesdropper to listen in and retrieve your confidential information including login details. With SFTP all the data is encrypted before it is sentient across the network. Hope you will satisfy with my opinions. I wish you for your great career.

SFTP uses port 22 instead of FTP's port 21, the difference is one encrypts the data before it gets uploaded or downloaded the other just leaves it as it is and uploads or downloads. As said before, SSH (Secure Shell) is what SFTP uses to upload things.
