Cash flow is essential to monitor and you could plot some easy to read graphs to show progress - often more revealing than a columns of figures or pages of accounts.
my personal one that i know is Microsoft excel for the spreadsheet, but then you can import that into a wide variety of software. my mother uses quickbooks which has an online option for $9.99/month which is great to get started with then you can upgrade once you get the money.
