Keywords get you hits from search engines, sure.
I wish more designers thought beyond the first 2 seconds though. Hits and users matters very little if they stay 10 seconds and see maybe part of one page.
It is time we started talking more about site penetration and loyalty--about whether the site was a "hit" for the person rather than just the person was a "hit" for the site. Did the person become a customer? Did they learn what you were trying to teach? Will they come back?
Also, some keywords get you a lot of hits but not the people you want, they need to be targeted and refined--fishing rather than trawling. It is far better to find the person who wants your product and tell them about it, than tell everyone in the world and hope for the best.
People are very resistent to untargetted messages and that includes keyword spam. Question for you all, how many of your users coming from search engines stay longer than a minute and visit more than one page?
