Being W3c compliant can be good as long as everything doesn't start looking the same. I have seen sites built by people with good reputations for following accepted standards, that were uninspiring for the audience or niche the site caters to.

Like learning everything, you start with the standards in the beginning. You become a true artist when you can be less rigid than those same standards.
