OMGosh, what an apropos thread.

Indeed, I wonder about folks who have the brass to ask for freebies from anyone.

Is it just me? If I ask someone to do something that I can't do - I ALWAYS offer something. Funds, goods, trade - whatever; but I like to have an agreement in advance.

Having been on both sides of this fence, I agree with SageMother that a rate should be agreed upon up front - and a deadline, too. I almost will not let a freelancer do something for me without pay - because a lot of people think that means that it doesn't matter how long it takes to get done.

The only thing bad I see about asking for half up front is someone just starting out who doesn't have many references to attest to their skill. I might not insist on half - but I don't think a smaller percentage of down-payment is unreasonable; for ANYBODY.
