I will follow up with what was said before...

I looked for the link to an article I read recently and couldn't place it.

780 was the standard before. (800 pixels wide minus scrollers/sidebars etc...)

now your looking at the 1024x768 screen size as a minimum size, some ridiculoulsy low percentage was on 800x600, and it looks like about 50% is actually above 1024x768. I believe this was a US study.

So, in short, the 900-1000 pixel wide range is safe,
but in not too much time you will be able to expand a little bit more.
